A heart murmur led to an echocardiogram when Aranel was almost 16 months old. The report notes, among other things, atria of normal size, a homogeneous myocardium and an interventricular septum measured between 5.5 and 5.9 mm, described by the veterinarian as an “equivocal thickness”.
No cardiac treatment was prescribed that day. A follow-up scan in 12 months was recommended, or sooner should symptoms appear. The document therefore does not, at this stage, diagnose hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: it calls for monitoring.
The report also recommends avoiding salty food. In practice, this makes us wary of many industrial dry foods, often richer in sodium than one imagines. It is one of the reasons we favour Farmina for Aranel; we detail our reasoning and our composition comparisons in our dry-food comparison.
We publish this follow-up because it illustrates, very concretely, our commitment to transparency. It is not possible to establish a causal link between this measurement and the parental results we do not have. It does, however, remind us why we consider it essential to be able to consult the breeding cats’ screenings before an adoption, even for a pet kitten.
